carla bruni - quelqu’un m’a dit

The lyrics to this song are post-worthy. I despise when people post lyrics to every song they ever hear on every blog they ever have, but this song by Carla Bruni translates beautifully. The French first lady is perfect.

I’m told that our lives aren’t worth much,
They pass like an instant, like wilting roses.
I’m told that time slipping by is a bastard
Making its coat of our sorrows.
Yet someone told me…

That you still loved me
Someone told me…
That you still loved me.
Well ? Could that be possible?

I’m told that fate makes fun of us,
That it gives us nothing and promises everything,
When happiness seems to be within our reach,
We reach out and find ourselves like fools.
Yet someone told me…

That you still loved me
Someone told me…
That you still loved me.
Well ? Could that be possible?

Well ? Could that be possible?

So who said that you still loved me?
I don’t remember any more, it was late at night,
I can still hear the voice, but I can no longer see the face,
“He loves you, it’s secret, don’t tell him I told you.”
You see, someone told me

That you still loved me
Did someone really tell me?
That you still loved me
Well, could that be possible?

I’m told that our lives aren’t worth much,
Passing in an instant, like wilting roses,
I’m told that time slipping by is a bastard,
Making its coat of our sadnesses.

That you still loved me
Someone told me…
That you still loved me.
Well ? Could that be possible?

In 2006, the incredibly short-lived instrumental band I started, Staristdeous, was selected to play the MACRoCk fest at JMU in VA. Today, while surfing Saxon Shore’s similar artists page on Last.fm, we were on there. Somehow two clicks later, I came across this podcast. The Drop was an amazing podcast done by Dan Portnoy. He covered music and events I actually liked. I listened to him before we met him at MACRoCk so it was killer to be interviewed by him- especially with Saxon Shore and Black Moth Super Rainbow. Here is the link to the actual podcast in iTunes (it is free)

I was 20 years old when this happened. I cannot believe it has been that long. I loved MACRoCk so it was an incredible honor to play. The problem when we got selected is that Staristdeous was really just me in my bedroom in my apartment with Brian. Two months after I got the acceptance call and the press junket, I had put together a band to make it happen. I used my Macbook Pro to play bass lines, additional guitar tracks and other random sounds and Anthony Evans played with headphones on. I have no idea how he did that. Brian played the other guitar and Ben played trumpet and piano.

This was forever ago. Brian and I are talking about recording an EP over Christmas, but instrumental music is hard to make alone. It tends to get boring.

This was a very Xanga-like Tumblr post. I blame it on my recent reading of my old Xanga posts.

This is one of my best friends pregnant by way of (alright!) my best friend. This picture makes me indescribably happy. As soon as this semester is over, I get to go see her in all her pregnant glory. This is also when I will start lobbying for them to name the kid after me.

15 weeks and a day. Do I look pregnant yet?

The first time I heard The Con, I was sold on Tegan and Sara (finally) and on Chris Walla’s ability to produce an album. Listening to this thing you really get a feel that the instrumental mix is unique and still strong. I haven’t heard any album produced like this one is. That aside, this song is a gem. Acoustic, it is a rare gem.

I did a one take demo of my Papaw singing one of his favorite gospel songs with my Memaw playing piano a couple years ago. He is a huge gospel music fan, and pretty much sits on his back porch most days singing along with different tapes. I didn’t really mix it at all, but it sounds like I want it to - raw voice, and the piano sounds like the instrumental tapes he sings to. It is perfect for what I want to remember the rest of my life. Thought some of you might enjoy it. If nothing else, hearing an old man sing is just cute.
